General Information
- Base Vehicle
- Since we couldn’t import a new Euro-truck into Canada, we had to settle for a North American made Volvo VHD chassis with three axles and a conventional cab.
- LHD or RHD
- Left hand drive.
- Year of manufacture
- 2016
- Engine
- Volvo D-13 straight 6 diesel, turbo charged with intercooler. 405hp and 1450lb.ft. of torque.
- Drive type
- The drive train is part time 6x6. Full time rear MERITOR MT-40-14X4D HYPOID tandem drive axles with air lockers and inter axle lock, 40,000lb. capacity. Gear ratio is 4.88. Front drive axle is hydraulic and runs with the touch of a dash button, from the transmission PTO. Sensors on the rear axles cause the front axle to drive at the same speed. The front axle drive motors are in each hub, and the design maintains the 2wd front axle wheel cut of 50°. This front drive solution saved 800lbs. of weight since there is no front differential and no transfer case, and causes no driveline resistance that would negatively impact fuel economy. The front hydraulic drive was assembled in the U.S. from Poclain components.
- Gearbox
- Allison 4500 extreme duty automatic 6 speed transmission like what is used in the military trucks. This was selected instead of the 13 speed Volvo iShift because the hydraulic front drive axle only operates in first gear. The Allison 1st gear will allow us to go 18mph before the front drive axle cuts out, but the Volvo iShift 1st gear is so low we’d only get 5 or 8 mph. Too low for decent usability.
- Suspension-wheels/tyres
- Front parabolic leaf spring, rear Volvo Primaxx trailing arm style air suspension. Wheels are Hutchinson military style bolt together aluminum wheels with internal bead locks. Tires are Michelin XZL 395/85 R20 with each tire having a 12,300lb. weight rating at 120psi.
- Wheel Base
- 263” (6680mm) measure to the centre of the two rear axles. The axle spacing is 54” (1372mm)
- Fuel Capacity
- 950 liters. This gives us a range of 2,500kms.
- Truck weight (kg)
- 20 metric tonnes (44,000lbs.) fully fueled, with full water tanks (680 liters)
- Reason for base vehicle
- Canadian regulations prevent us from importing any Euro-truck newer that 15 years old. The Volvo is the only North American made heavy truck worth buying. Frankly, they’re all junk when compared to the Euro-trucks. But this Volvo uses the same engine and computer systems as the Euro-Volvos, so we can get repairs, including electronics, world wide.
